Sage Northcutt’s time together with the UFC is finished…for anyways.
The ultra-friendly and athletically gifted welterweight entered free service after his triumph over Zak Ottow along with the UFC has decided to not re-sign him.
Northcutt, 22, is now 6-2 at the UFC with stints at both lightweight and welterweight and he combined the promotion with a great deal of hype behind him after first being ‘discovered’ on UFC president Dana White’s reality series ‘Lookin’ for a Fight’.
“We let Sage go,” White said. “some work is needed by Sage and Sage is young. Let him get some work in a few of these associations and we’ll find where this child winds up in a few years. Maybe we’ll pick him back up.
“His contract was up so we let him move. ”
Despite White’s announcement that Northcutt was ‘young’ and desired work, he had been a highly touted prospect who only appeared to be coming into his own after working together with UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber and Team Alpha Male at Sacramento.
Perhaps Northcutt’s biggest criticism could have been the amount of competition he conquered with his enemies at the UFC holding a joint 6-17 record on the roster with only two of these fighters still within the Octagon.
The UFC saw in Northcutt early on to pay a massive starting contract with his fight within the Octagon bringing $80,000 to him to him. The salary might be what sealed Northcutt’s fate together with the UFC during contract negotiations.
In any event, Northcutt is currently a free agent with several promotions reportedly interested in recovering in services. The Texas native has been seen in a current ONE Championship occasion sitting alongside Demetrious Johnson and signees Eddie Alvarez.
