Under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the Colts have forced at least one turnover in every match this season.

Eberflus abandoned the Dallas Cowboys where he had spent the previous seven months, packed up his family and moved to Indianapolis where he was under the belief he’d participate in Josh McDaniels’ team.

Most of us know what happened with that. McDaniels reneged on his agreement with general director Chris Ballard and returned into New England.

The decision of ballard has been one of the greatest moves he has made, as his defensive coordinator has turned on what had turned into a porous unit .

The Colts have the NFL’s top tackler in rookie linebacker Darius Leonard, they’ve forced at least one turnover in all of the first 12 games and the system ranks 11th in overall defense.

That’s a stark contrast to when the Colts finished 20th or worse, in five of Chuck Pagano’s seasons that comprised two defensive coordinators, for example 30th season.

“Just having a lot of ties into this strategy when Chris was in Chicago, so Chris was very persuasive and incredibly good in his conviction that Matt was the perfect guy. It actually couldn’t have worked out. I know that it’s mad. Nonetheless, it couldn’t have come any benefit, although it is an odd method in order for it to get together.

“Personally, Matt, I just have a lot of respect due to him. [His] high ethics and character as a man — only stands for everything that we would want — carries himself how we’d want a trainer to take himself”

The relationship between Eberflus and Reich has turned into a relatively smooth one because based on the defensive coordinator, the head trainer is”trusting in terms of that he is character-wise and integrity.” Reich attends the meetings that are defensive to talk about the game program and give his view out of an offensive perspective, but he has given Eberflus the freedom.

The shield was not an easy fix for Eberflus, as for years it was the Colts’ link that is obvious. There were numerous occasions once the crime required to put on points to have a chance.

“For him he was more focused on the now, not exactly what happened in days gone by… we’re likely to see this system and how it has worked before and we’re likely to go out of there,” linebacker Anthony Walker stated. “That’s what we did. We’re trying to live up to that particular, but additionally leave our own legacy in a system that’s been in existence for 25 decades.”

The thing Eberflus did was garbage the 3-4 defense of the prior regime and switch to a 4-3 Cover 2 zone defense when putting a premium on speed speed and more speed with a starting unit that includes six first- or second-year players.

His message for his band at another of these initial conversations was: his shield isn’t for all of us and they would be subjected in it.

“Meaning you’ll be subjected at a fantastic way or a bad way,” Eberflus said. “if you are coaching the perfect way and doing the perfect things, then guess what? Everything is going to increase. Where it’s supposed to rise it will rise. The excellent players we’ve got on our defense. All the guys that buy into the fundamentals and are coached properly all rise up… Everything has gone outside on the table. There is no hiding in the system. Can not hide your time and campaign, can’t hide the implementation. That is known by the players. We tell them. The technique hardens one to play a certain way and then what happens , when guys buy into that, then it will become a method that they hold each other “

The following thing Eberflus did was repeat over and over that they went to aggressively attempt to strip the ball every match. This has created a winwin position for the Colts, as they have forced turnovers and awarded the offense a short field. After forcing 20 turnovers a year ago, they have 21 this season (tied for eighth in the NFL) with three matches remaining.

“He is always talking about this,” Leonard said. “You don’t know anyone who wants to keep getting hit in the face again and again. If we keep moving after the ball over again, in some time they are likely to spit the little and the ball is going to be outside for all of people to receive it done “

The Colts held the Jaguars only and into six points 211 total yards in Week 13. That is adequate for a win, however not that day because they lost. Scores that way did not happen usually before.

Eberflus is one who is rarely satisfied. That’s a fantastic thing as he wants as much perfection as possible. As when he can’t do it correctly in training, he isn’t going to accomplish it during the match he has been known to blow the whistle when your lineman is wrapped up in the incorrect spot by a matter of inches.

It’s all part of him not needing his defense to be”exposed”

“He is probably one of the most detailed people I have existed,” Leonard said. “He is very special about every little thing. He is very enthused about the shield and always covers the device, and he only tries to make sure everybody knows what they are doing and… what everybody else is performing. It’s things like that, that have let us to have success”
