METAIRIE, La. — Derek Newton is 1 step closer to creating a remarkable comeback from ripping both of his own patellar tendons in 2016 with the Houston Texans.

The veteran offensive lineman signed with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday to let them have added depth as soon as they placed veteran backup offensive lineman Michael Ola on injured reserve.

Newton has not played since suffering the accident. The Texans published him in April after he spent the whole 2017 season on the physically unable to perform list.

Newton started 68 games for the Texans, chiefly as their right tackle.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder had been injured in Week 7 of their 2016 season during a Monday Night Football game while obstructing Denver Broncos pass-rusher Von Miller.
