ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins running straight back Adrian Peterson doesn’t need to let coach Jay Gruden understand what he believes. He just has to offer him the look.

The look was seen on NFL sidelines since Peterson came to the league at 2007 and will be translated because this: Run the ball. That’s the message Peterson delivered in Week 15 — and it’s one he wishes to sacrifice to the next two weeks.

He knows where to park himself on the sideline, too: right next to Gruden. Just in case Gruden wants yet another playcaller.

“I will be ready to rollup, ” Peterson explained. ”

The Redskins (7 7 ), decimated with injuries, won’t stay alive in the playoff race should they don’t receive solid games against the rushing attack and Peterson particularly. And a powerful finish will mean yet another landmark for Peterson.

Peterson, 33, is 77 yards shy of 1,000 for this season, which would make him the oldest player since John Riggins at 1984 to top 1,000 yards. Frank Gore reached 1,000 on the last day of their 20-16 season at age 33, but Peterson would be three months old than Gore was at that moment. It’d be Peterson’s eighth 1,000-yard season and his first since 2015.

“For me, 1,000 yards is easy and also I ’ve always felt that way,” he said. “It’ll happen. I’m not urgent it. ”

High-end Jordan Reed already has been eliminated tight wind Vernon Davis is questionable with a concussion.

Tennessee could induce Washington to throw stacking the box to avoid Peterson. The Redskins have used more of the pistol configurations with backs Chris Thompson and Byron Marshall, trusting to develop mismatches. However, Peterson will stay the guy the running game will live or die together with, and also the conduct blocking was suspect at better for more than monthly.

The Redskins are 7-2 if Peterson rushes for at least 50 yards, but it’s been difficult to reach this number lately. He did so in Sunday’s victory over Jacksonville because of 31 yards on five carries throughout the winning force; he’d 20 yards before that. In the past seven weeks, as the Redskins’ accidents have been mounted along the line, Peterson has averaged just 3.57 yards per carry — also he’s handled only 67 yards in his past 2-9 carries.

“Whether we conduct the ball or maybe not, I have that mindset,” Peterson explained. “That’s O exactly I ’m assembled. … Just hey, I will get it done, so give me the chance; give me the opportunity. ”

That’s what Peterson kept telling Gruden at Jacksonville, though perhaps with increased flowery language along with fewer words.

“Throughout the game, he was looking at me and giving me a dirty appearance. He’s the ball; he felt good. ‘Coach, I’m good; I’m good, person,’” Gruden said. “I’m not getting there, Adrian. I’m wanting. He’s the kind of guy that answers the bell if he has given an opportunity. ”

Subsequent to the Redskins signed Peterson at August, Gruden anticipated more of those sideline exchanges.

“I was a little nervous when we got him. I was like, man, should I don’t give this person 20 times every game, he is going to kick my butt,” Gruden said. “He’s been very good, man. He’s been very patient, very understanding concerning the rotations, about what we decide to try to do. He’s merely been a great guy to have on all of us “

Peterson couldn’t recreate his stare for reporters Thursday, due to the fact it must happen throughout a game — as soon as the competitiveness happens.

“For me, it’s only like inside, ” I ’m trying to reveal to you the passion and love that I have. I am able to get it done; I do need to have it done. That’s I’ll be sense. ”

Team mates saw the determination Peterson had on the last drive from the Jaguars. His close friend, Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, stated that’s what they need at the last two weeks. And yes, Williams said, the line is well conscious of just how close Peterson is to 1,000 yards.

“We probably should have had him earlier,” Williams explained. “But as long as we make it, ” I ’damn happy for him. It’s a outstanding achievement for a guy believed to not have anything left. ”

Williams said it’s to mean a lot more than Peterson lets on.

“I’d think it could mean a lot due to his ’s been through a lot, and a lot of people wrote him off having not good reason aside from just era,” Williams explained. “I’d think it will mean much to know he can play with a game at a high grade. Maybe not that he didn’t think he may, but it shows to everyone he can still do it. ”
