Borussia Dortmund edged second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach 21 in the Bundesliga on Friday to bounce straight back from their first league loss in midweek and reestablish a nine-point guide at the top of the table going into the winter rest.
Goals from teen-ager Jadon Sancho and captain Marco Reus gave Dortmund, who have been stunned 21 by encouraged Fortuna Duesseldorf on Tuesday, victory within the top-of-the-table battle and increased them to 42 points from 17 games.
Gladbach, that equalised on the stroke of halftime, are second on 33 points but could slide to third if winners Bayern Munich, too on 3 3, earn a place or more at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
“It had been tough at the beginning and for us it was important to show patience and retain the spaces tight,” Reus told reporters.
“Obviously everyone wants to win the name. That is why we play football. I’m pleased of the team because we gave everything we got, every tiny piece, and we got the results we wanted.”
