ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills had enabled 75 points and 653 yards throughout the first six quarters of the summer growing season when coach Sean McDermott chose to take over playcalling duties from defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier at halftime of the team’s home opener.
The Bills lost this match, famous more for the abrupt half-time retirement of corner back Vontae Davis, to the Los Angeles Chargers. However, they pulled off the NFL’s greatest upset in 2-3 years that the subsequent Sunday, beating the Minnesota Vikings from 21 points despite being 17-point underdogs.
Frazier declared playcalling responsibilities in Minnesota and earned a match ball due to his efforts in the rally of his shield against the Vikings, the team coached from 2011 through 2013. He had been fired after compiling an 18-29 album and losing his only playoff match.
Given Frazier’s leadership of the Bills’ defensive turn, it might be time to get a team to provide him another chance as a head coach.
“I believe he ought to be considered,” McDermott said Thursday. I believe he’s a good coach and he’s done a great job with the shield mechanisms “
Even the Fritz Pollard Alliance last month termed Frazier certainly one of 1 1 minority trainers that should be considered for HeadCoach openings this offseason. Curiosity about Frazier in January wouldn’t be surprising; he interviewed to the Indianapolis Colts‘ vacancy winter.
“He should get another opportunity to interview, just like he did this past year,” Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander stated. “Our production, being truly a top five defense, that form of victory should merit at least a chance”
The Bills have enabled the 11th-fewest points per game since Week 3 even though a red zone defense that ranks 28th over that interval. While maybe not stifling in every statistical category, the Bills’ defense has found success in second halves. Ever since Week 3, the Bills are allowing 8.8 points per game after halftime, fifth-best at the NFL, compared to 12.5 in first halves, tied for 19th.
Even the halftime alterations were evident in Sunday’s 14-13 victory over the Detroit Lions, when the Patriots held leading receiver Kenny Golladay to 3-1 second-half receiving yards after consuming 11-5 yards to Golladay at the first half.
“[Frazier] does not freak out to the field,” safety Micah Hyde stated. “I have been around some coaches that you give plays up, you stop trying touchdowns plus it’s a fear. He never gets overly much or has overly low. On top of this, you move into the defensive meetings plus it’s the exact identical way.
“He’s never crying. He’s never going mad. I do believe it goes back to him playing with [together using the Chicago Bears at the 1980s]. He knows there was certainly going to be games where matters do not go right.”
McDermott, who functioned while the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive coordinator in 2009-10 and directed the Carolina Panthers‘ defense in 2011-16, has his fingerprints to the Bills’ defense, but just isn’t directly engaged leading the band on Sundays.
“Leslie has a heavy hand in what we do,” Alexander said. “He’s making decisions and calls on the sideline.”
