Championship unwanted Aston Villa have decided to sign Croatia goal keeper Lovre Kalinic on a four-and-a-half-year thing.
The 28-year-old will join Villa from Belgian topflight side Gent once the transfer window opens on 1 January.
Smith said:“We’re thrilled to be signing some one of Lovre’s experience and quality. He’s a superb goalkeeper.”
Kalinic was an associate of this Croatia squad that ended runnersup at the 2018 World Cup, playing just in their final group match against Iceland.
Since Danijel Subasic retired after a World Cup final defeat by France, the 6ft keeper, capped 14 days, has become the first-choice keeper of Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic.
Current Villa numberone Orjan Nyland – authorized by previous supervisor Steve Bruce from German side FC Ingolstadt at the summertime – was given a vote of confidence by Smith despite several nervy displays.
