Seattle’s Tyler Lockett hauls at a 45-yard reception despite good Policy from Kansas City’s Charvarius Ward.
The Chiefs were all on the street in a noisy environment and had a victory to clinch the AFC West title. They were also playing with a veteran cop in Russell Wilson.
Playing the rookies says alot about Chiefs’ desperation to repair their woeful defense. They switched into Ward as a starter in place of wounded Kendall Fuller, and Smith because the 3rd corner in place of the benched Orlando Scandrick.
“I played with some young guys tonight that I wanted to just find a look at, I thought would help us a bit,” coach Andy Reid said. “They had some learning adventures, but they battled through.
“This was a changeup. Provide them with an opportunity there. They’ve got good speed and ability. I presumed it would be worth a shot. They did some great things”
The Chiefs also benched starting safety Ron Parker, who was dormant. The Chiefs proceeded with Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen, who began training camp as starters but had harms interrupt their seasons.
Reid can not be blamed for its time and effort to enhance spirituality. The Chiefs are 31st in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed.
Ward and Smith didn’t seem to help much in the 38-31 loss of Kansas City. Wilson threw for 271 yards, even lots in the direction of Ward or even Smith. He also had three touchdown passes.
“I’m not going to compare,” Reid said, if asked if player was a marked advancement over Scandrick. “I presumed Ward did some good things in that position.
“We’re off with a hair on a few of them. We’re right there. … Those are young guys that have been in those positions doing that. We’re in position. We just have to create a play”
The Chiefs, acquired an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys in training camp , ward at a trade at the end of the preseason. Smith is the Chiefs’ sixth-round draft selection. Neither played much except for special teams before Sunday night’s match.
“I believe I played with acceptable but not good enough,” Ward said. “It was my first match, my debut at cornerback on defense. I was sort of nervous, however, you can not be nervous in the NFL. [Wilson and some of those Seahawks] have been to a handful of Super Bowls. They’re experienced and I’m kinda inexperienced. I have just got to grow within this next week, be prepared for the Raiders if they call my number again.”
Fuller can Reunite for following Sunday’s match against Oakland. Reid wouldn’t say whether the Chiefs would stick in that match with Smith, Ward or both.
