Qualifications for its 20-19 World-championship: Winner of European eligibility play-off versus Lithuania

Few people out from the 340,000 inhabitants of Iceland will declare that they understand as much about hand ball since Gudmundur Gudmundsson. Produced in the capital city Reykjavik 57 decades before, Gudmundsson played with 230 international games with the Iceland jersey and scored 356 aims. Earlier this year, he signed a three-year contract to eventually become the coach of these males ’s national team to the next time in his career.

Both previous periods as Iceland trainer were from 2001-2004 and 20082012 and comprised a historical silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and a EURO bronze-medal at Austria at 2010. At the six years he had been far from home, he worked in Germany, Denmark and Bahrain and led the Danes to claim gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Iceland failed to function since they expected at the 2018 EURO at Croatia. That bothersome 13th status marked the end of Geir Sveinsson’s bicycle as their head trainer and a fresh beginning under the guidance of Gudmundur Gudmundsson. His first challenge was to qualify them to the 20-19 World Championship.

In the Qualification Europe Phase Two play-off, Iceland fulfilled Lithuania. The first leg was played Vilnius, at which Lithuania could actually keep coming back after a tough first half and the end result was a draw in 27:27. At home, Iceland played and won 34:31 with an out standing Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson — high scorer with 10 goals — to secure a global Championship berth.

Despite being 3-9 years older, Sigurdsson remains one of the best left wing wings on earth. Even the Rhein-Neckar Löwen player is just one of the heroes of the Beijing 2008 effort — he contributed 43 aims to assist his federal team win the silver medal.

28-year-old Barca Lassa centre back Aron Palmarsson is just one of the planet ’s skilled players and accumulates plenty of experience — he was playing EHF Champions League since 2009, when he combined THW Kiel in Germany.

In defence, Gudmundsson can depend on 22-year-old IFK Kristianstad lineup player Arnar Freyr Arnarsson. He can have a challenging job from the 20-19 world-championship preliminary round — since Iceland will face 2018 EURO gold medallists Spain, Croatia, FYR Macedonia, Bahrain and Japan at a demanding Group B.
