India watched off Australia by 137 runs at the third Test in Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead in the sequence.
The hosts began the final day on 258-8 pursuing an improbable 399, but after rain postponed the beginning, India needed only 4.3 overs to wrap up the win.
Jasprit Bumrah, that shot career-best game figures of 9-86, had Pat Cummins border to slide 63, until Nathan Lyon gloved Ishant Sharma behind.
Bumrah’s haul has been the most effective with an India pace bowler at Australia.
