BOSTON — A number of the greatest deals come once the holiday season is finished. That is the approach Red-Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is shooting in regards to 20-19.

Boston’s World Series championship-winning group is largely intact.

The remainder of the band goes back together, and Dombrowski only must earn a couple of tweaks to round out the roster. Here’s what the Red Sox have to do before Spring Training starts:

Identify a closer, more add painkillers
One thing is certain: Dombrowski will acquire a reliever — perhaps even two — before the off season is finished. The challenge is if they are of the closer or setup variety.

It may be that Dombrowski attracts supplemental relievers from outside the organization with the idea that director Alex Cora will promote either Matt Barnes or even Ryan Brasier to the purpose of closer.

Dombrowski has said multiple times he does not envision making a”big expenditure” for his 20-19 closer. Yet, there happens to be a plethora of relievers on the market with closing experience. David Robertson along with Adam Ottavino might get the biggest contracts of the freeagent relivers that are around.

Cody Allen, Kelvin Herrera, Brad Brach along with Bud Norris are known pitchers who also have a chance of slipping to the Sox.

Beyond this, however, there is uncertainty. It would be reassuring for Red Sox fans if Dombrowski would make headway with at least one of those players this off season on a longterm thing.

Betts and Bogaerts both came up through the Red Sox’s farm system, and they are big victory stories. It would be a shame to see that their talents being used elsewhere. Sale has been Dombrowski’s valuable acquisition 2 off seasons ago, and it cost Boston greatest prospects Yoan Moncada along with Michael Kopech. When Sale fell out Manny Machado to end the World Series, it was clear that the commerce paid off. In case the Sox have the ability to maintain Sale after his contract expires, then it’d be a much better commerce.

Trade a catcher
Somehow, the Red Sox carried a grabbing trio in their roster last year in Christian Vazquez, Sandy Leon along with Blake Swihart. That probably is not renewable next year. In fact, that the Sox would probably get more production out of the positioning if there was clarity who the lead is. Boston still does not know precisely what kind of catcher Swihart is, because he’s never gotten the chance to play with regularly. That is mostly due to injuries, but last yr, it was because Swihart was captured in a logjam.

If the Red Sox intend to use Swihart sparingly again in 20-19, it would behoove them to deal him this off season while he has any value. One other option is to trade Vazquez and hand the keys to Swihart. In either case, Leon — a excellent guardian — is perfect like a backup.
