GREEN BAY, Wis. — Allow the coaching search begin in earnest for the Green Bay Packers.

Per month later Mike McCarthy was terminated, the team can push all-in now that the growing summer season is finished.

In 1 sense, Monday was the first day in the rest of the Packers’ lifetime. They can now interview any NFL trainer that ’s maybe not at the playoffs or even has a playoff bye. The latter means that they could talk this week to members of four coaching Managers: the Rams, Saints,” Chiefs and Patriots. Simply trainers from teams playing in this weekend’s wildcard match are off limits.

It’s also the time for Joe Philbin to be formally interviewed for the job, although his 2-2 record as interim head coach may tell team president Mark Murphy and general director Brian Gutekunst all they will need to know.

Philbin met with the team one last time Monday afternoon and left them with an email that was applicable to himself and them: Embrace change.

“Anything that might be,” Philbin said, “rather than maybe never appearing at as a negative, appearing at this as a positive. ”

Philbin didn’t run formal exit interviews and players were free to leave town for the offseason after Monday’s 9 a.m. team meeting. And while the existing coaching staff is on hold — people under contract for next season were told that they have to wait before a new coach will be hired to learn their fate — Philbin said he would be around Lambeau Field if players wanted to talk.

The alternative for Philbin is that his true interview — something he was through before. He was hired as an Miami Dolphins head trainer in 2012 and went 24-28 at three-plus years before he was fired during the 2015 season.

“I presume one of the things I’ve learned is how important fit is,” Philbin said Monday. “I think maybe the first time that I went … and also you ’ve never been a head coach, you’re not as concerned with some of that substance. Boy, I wish to receive a head coaching job. I’ve already been 28 years at the business and that I ’ve been a head trainer also here’s my own chance.

“And I was in a situation where I’m not sure if that was the specific fit. ”

That’s something not merely Philbin but all candidates will need to be aware of when it comes to the Packers, who are exceptional from the fact that they don’t have one commanding owner. Murphy, the mind of the seven-member executive committee, conducts the publicly owned team and last offseason changed the management structure so that he — and not the GM — oversees the mind trainer. Gutekunst and salary cap specialist Russ Ball also report to Murphy.

“I think fit and alignment in this particular situation — Mark Murphy, Brian, Russ and the top trainer — is absolutely vital,” Philbin reported. “of course, if it’s not, it won’t work. I read something . I was just sort of reading around where someone was a CEO in business and he said, ‘You are able to ’t want to become the big cheese just for the perks of the job. You gotta love the position. ’ These are all hard occupations. They’re not complicated jobs, right? Because in football the game is not that complicated. Nevertheless they’r e work hard.

“You go home when you get your tail beat 31-0 and also you ’re not feeling great, you know? Personally and also for the Green Bay Packers. So again, I’m definitely going to present who I am, what I believe in, what I believe I could perform for the organization and it has to be quite a game for them, you know? I’m so convinced they’ve criteria which they want to have met. In case Joe Philbin matches those better than anyone else, then potentially, maybe I’ll be the next head coach. Should I don’t, then that’s OK. They need to place the criteria. And I could ’t change a good deal at the subsequent two days, the next week. ”

Murphy is expected to run a broad search that could include more than a dozen interviews. He has talked to former NFL head coaches Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano. He plans to talk to north western trainer Pat Fitzgerald, who was hired by Murphy in his former occupation for a college athletic manager. Yet another college trainer, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, is to the wish list.

However, the bulk of the candidates will originate from the pool of NFL assistants. The Packers have asked an interview with Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak (22-26 in 36 months whilst the Titans’ head trainer ). McDaniels is expected to be one of the top candidates for his or her job with veteran quarterback tombrady and how that could be transferable to Aaron Rodgers. They’ve also allegedly expressed an interest in Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell, who took more than Miami’s coach after Philbin was terminated in midseason. Other possible applicants in the playoff-bye-week teams involve Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and his quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi, the grandson of Vince Lombardi; Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor and special teams coordinator John Fassel; Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Other head coaches fired on Monday could be considered, such as former Dolphins coach Adam Gase.

And there would be the trainers on teams from wildcard playoff games who’ll become available when their teams have been knocked out.

The titles were bandied about as players cleaned out their lockers on Monday and Philbin walked away the podium for the last period in 2018 amidst the uncertainty of exactly what 20-19 would attract.

Yet it didn’t seem to disturb the even-keeled Philbin.

“Those individuals are special and what would make this place what it is in fact, in my humble opinion. So, you realize , we’ll take it one day at a time. However, in order to execute there and then lead the Green Bay Packers for a few weeks, it’s a liberty , it’s honor. So if this ’s it, then this ’s it. ”
