CEO Christopher Johnson along with Maccagnan, who’ll interact to get Bowles’ replacement, either stressed that the significance of employing a coach who can make Darnold a star.

“anyone does not need to be an offensive- or – defensive-minded coach, a se, but we absolutely should make sure they will have a plan in place to establish our younger quarterback in ,” Maccagnan explained.

The Jets already have reached out to three potential candidates. They requested permission to speak with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken along with Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach Kris Richard, sources said.

Both Maccagnan and Johnson believe Darnold will attract top candidates.

“We have got some great young players, including especially Sam,” Johnson explained. “We haven’t had that which we think is that a franchise quarterback in a good long time.”

Darnold ended his rookie season in an upswing, but it wasn’t sufficient to save Bowles, who ended with a 24-40 record in four seasons. The Jets went 4-12 this season, including nine losses in their past 10 games.

In the place of a housecleaning,” Johnson chose to stick using Maccagnan, whose erratic teaser album has come under scrutiny.

“We have developed what I think is a fantastic plan,” explained Johnson, describing he retained Maccagnan. “it is a plan we’re in sync , plus it really came with Sam. Now we’re planning to be able to build with Sam, and build approximately Sam with great players we have with this team already.”

Johnson made it clear he believes that the team underachieved. The acting owner surfaced with security Jamal Adams, who made headlines by questioning the team’s skill level in the aftermath of its own season-ending decrease to the New England Patriots.

“Who wouldn’t desire more talent? But I actually don’t think that is the whole answer,” Johnson explained. “I think we’ve some real great talent with this team already. We should’ve done better in the win-loss column. But I certainly appreciate his comments.”

Despite the fact that the Maccagnan-Bowles union failed to produce a post-season appearance, Johnson said he will not change the power arrangement. He explained Maccagnan and the brand new coach will record directly to him, as opposed to the traditional approach of having the coach report to the GM.

Johnson also said he won’t look at any head-coaching applicants who demand total control. That seemingly could eliminate established, big-name coaches.

“I think that would be the wrong person for the project,” Johnson explained. “Which will be off the desk .”

Johnson, in his present role for only two seasons, never has coordinated a search. Neither has Maccagnan, who had no input into the hiring of Bowles in 2015. They’ll spearhead the hunt, along with vice president of personnel Brian Heimerdinger. The Jets don’t have any plans to employ another firm for guidance. Johnson said he will make the final decision.

Their lack of experience can hinder them in an aggressive marketplace. There are lots of questions hovering across the Jets, who haven’t made the playoffs as 2010.

“Look, a lot has not gone ,” Johnson explained. “Like I said, a portion of that is my fault and I Will get the blame onto that. I will have to do a much superior job, but I actually don’t think the organizational arrangement is at fault.”

He declined to say how many candidates they will encounter. Johnson wouldn’t eliminate a faculty coach. He explained head-coaching experience can be a plus, however, not mandatory.

“That really is about finding somebody who is able to develop a youthful team,” Johnson explained.

The target, clearly, is always to over take . Asked if he is tired of chasing the perennial AFC East champs,” Johnson said”It keeps me up at night.”
