The Indians and Padres have been in touch regarding a possible Kluber trade since the New Year began, but no price had been close of Friday night, sources said. A separate source said that the Dodgers have remained involved in recent trade negotiations with the Indians about Kluber.

Resources say that the Padres are trying to get Kluber without consuming any of their top five prospects, as ranked by MLB Pipeline. To accomplish that, the team probably will want to spend the multiple Major League players, together with outfielders Manuel Margot along with Hunter Renfroe among the options. The Indians are expected to have a minumum of one outfielder if they trade Kluber, given their need for Major League thickness at the location.

Additionally, it is possible the Indians would disagree that the Padres include a starting pitcher with Major League experience in a transaction for Kluber, although north park club officials are loath to move lefthanders Joey Lucchesi along with Eric Lauer.

The Indians have interest in Padres left-hander Adrian Morejon being a candidate for inclusion within the transaction. Morejon, 1 9, is ranked as the club’s No. 6 prospect by MLB pipe-line, also he posted a 3.30 ERA with Class A high level Lake Elsinore at 2018.

Kluber, that turns 33 in April, has won two League Cy Young Awards over the last five seasons — a period during which he is one of two Major League pitchers to throw 1000 innings. (Nationals genius Max Scherzer is one other.) Kluber is under center control during 2021 — for example team options — for $52.5 million.

Earlier this month, sources said the Indians had not retreated from their stance a Chris Sale-grade reunite would be required to allow them to trade Kluber or fellow right hander Trevor Bauer.

The Dodgers, Brewers and Phillies also have discussed Kluber together with the Indians at different points during the offseason. The Brewers and Giants have had trade conversations seeing San Francisco genius Madison Bumgarner.
