21, the England centre-back, was taken off after 2-3 minutes following a battle with Clarets captain Ben Mee.
“Obviously being outside for longer than we had first hoped for is hard to consume,” said Gomez.
“This had been an injury caused by a direct effect – like the majority of the injuries I’ve had in my career – so that I know it’s just a example of when it’s completely cured I am good to go again.”
Before suffering the injury on 5 December gomez had made 18 appearances for the Premier League leaders.
“It’s a blow for the boy and for people – because prior to this injury he had been in such fantastic shape,” said Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.
“He’s too valuable to get any risk together, both for our present and future, thus we understand this procedure done and he comes home when he’s ready.
“His attitude during this rehab has been outstanding but it only hasn’t treated as we’d have liked, so we’ll make this intervention and then he will return.”
