CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers believe quarter back Cam Newton‘s right shoulder that was scoped last month will be cured in time to allow him to start the summer season. Newton says on his newest YouTube station that critics suggesting they’ve seen”the most useful of Cam Newton” will make him dangerous than everbefore.
But there are no guarantees.
Keep in mind, Newton was believed as healthy as he’s been in years entering season, and after six matches began experiencing soreness in the shoulder that originally was repaired prior to the 20 17 year old. He was so ineffective down the stretch, declaring a lot more than 30 yards couldn’t throw, that him shuts down for the final two matches.
So while everything appears to be trending favorable to your 2015 NFL MVP, the Panthers need to get prepared for almost any what-ifs.
Finding a cop who will take repetitions while Newton is currently rehabbing and be available if there be a setback.
He’s still a project though Allen looked good from the Saints, completing 16 of 27 pass attempts for 228 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Heinicke, that started in Week 16, is a free agent using potential. But he is coming from surgery to repair a torn triceps and is somewhat of a project despite the fact that he has experience in Norv Turner’s offense.
The Panthers likely will use a draft pick on the quarterback in an attempt to locate a long term replacement for Newton, who turns 30 in May.
But what they do not need is a seasoned player — just like they had in Derek Anderson (2011 17 ) — a person they are convinced can step in and win when Newton isn’t available.
This season’s free agent quarterback class isn’t great away from candidates’ couple, and they are looking for starting jobs at a price tag.
Here Is What the Panthers probably are searching at:
Nick Foles, 30, Philadelphia: The Super Bowl MVP after a 2017 season paid the Eagles $2 million to void his 2019 option year. He become a free agent or Philadelphia will franchise and exchange him to a team. The Panthers aren’t looking for a beginner.
The 2 were 11 5 together in 2015. But Bridgewater wants to be the starter and the Saints likely is going to do what they could to keep him Drew Brees‘ long-term replacement. Or Bridewater goes to a different team.
A personal accident in Week 3 and then the development of Baker Mayfield cost him the starting job with the Browns last season, but there’s enough upside that he would be the sort of security blanket that the Panthers seek.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, 3 6, Tampa Bay: He’s much like Derek Anderson for the reason that he is definitely an elderly veteran who can triumph. He played well enough at Tampa Bay last season that he got the nick name”FitzMagic.” He threw four touchdown passes in October in a 42-28 loss at Carolina. A reach for the Panthers because of the age.
Brock Osweiler, 28, Miami: He’s 15-15 as a beginner, including 8-6 at Houston in 20-16. A former second-round choose of Arizona State, he is still young. He showed possible if he replaced an injured Peyton Manning during the summer the Panthers are beaten by that the Broncos in the Super Bowl.
Trevor Siemian, 27, Minnesota: He also was a copy for the Broncos team that beat Carolina in Super Bowl 50. He’s 13-11 as a starter with 30 touchdowns into 24 interceptions. He didn’t play a down with Minnesota last season after being traded to the Vikings, but he is young enough to build up and experienced enough to win.
Mark Sanchez, 32, Washington: He’s 37-36 as a starter and directed the New York Jets into two AFC title matches. When he would accept a role, he is at some stage in his career. Accuracy has become a problem. He has a career 56.6 completion percent. But Newton needed a career proportion of 58.5 until Turner got him to 67.9 last season.
He has only a single start and lost that you. But he is enjoy and a former third-round choice Anderson, played Oregon State.
Matt Cassell, 3 6, Detroit: He’s got the experience with 7 3 starts. When he was 10-5 during the normal season, He’s postseason experience with a single start. But he’s launched the previous few seasons and was 1 6 as a rookie at Dallas in 2015.
Robert Griffin III, 29, Baltimore: ESPN actually needed him rated higher than Newton after the 2012 season in which Griffin directed Washington into the play as a beginner. He hasn’t been the same since because of ankle and knee injuries.
Geno Smith, 28, N.Y. Giants: He’s still young and has 3-1 starts, but only 12 of these were wins and he’s thrown 3 6 choices to 29 touchdowns.
Joe Webb, 32, Houston: He was with the Panthers out of 2014-16 but played mostly wide receiver and special teams. He’s completed in the past seven seasons.
Josh McCown, 39, N.Y. Jets: He’ll be 40 in July and it includes a career-record of 23-53.
Colin Kaepernick, 3-1: He’s intriguing. The Panthers Founded last year on safety Eric Reid, that enjoy Kaepernick comes with a collusion grievance from the NFL because teams wouldn’t sign them after they began kneeling through the national anthem in 20-16 to protest societal injustice. Reid paid off that the Panthers would love to resign him. While signing Kaepernick would cause quite a stir and would be a distraction initially, the knowledge together with Reid shows owner David Tepper is ready to take chances. Kaepernick was 28 30 5-2 in helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl in 12-4 and 2012 using a visit to the NFC title game in 2013, as a rookie. Kaepernick atleast would have a solid ally, if Carolina resigns Reid.
Keeping options open
Flacco, 3-4 , likely is on the lookout for a place to get started. He’s launched all 163 matches in which he’s played since 2008. When there is a uncertainty Newton might not be ready, they’d be potential win now options when surrounded by a solid supporting castas well as the Panthers have that together with Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore and Greg Olsen.
