By beating top seed Simona Halep to secure the Qatar Open elise Mertens has claimed the title of her career.
23, mertens, recovered out of a break and the set – losing 18 points in a row at one point from the group that was next – to beat the world number 3 3-6 6-4 6-3.
World number 2 1 Mertens also conquered a medical timeout that was lengthy from the first group for a back issue.

Mertens’ victory on the Romanian was her third win on a top 10 player in Doha.
She had beaten Kiki Bertens and Angelique Kerber, annually after she had been knocked out from the championship in the very first round.
