Hot Stove news, rumors

The Padres remain on Bryce Harper, too, and MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman noted the Padres have made a”serious offer” on the superstar outfielder.

Tweet out of @JonHeyman: Padres arent kidding around and so are believed to have made serious offers for both Machado and Harper. Their bid for Machado is thought to be for about $250M (and about 8 years) tho there’s the Cali taxation and potentially deferrals. Bid for Harper considered to be for significantly more than that.

The specific dollar amount for either offer remains a puzzle. Heyman tweeted his view that the offer of Harper is even higher than that — and which the market of Machado stays around eight decades and $250 million.

San Diego is in desperate need of a bat, and both players will provide that sort of thump. Machado batted .297/.367/.538 with 37 homers last season. Harper submitted a .249/.393/.496 slash line. The Padres have not experienced a hitter with 30-plus homers and a .900 OPS because Adrian Gonzalez in 2010.

The Padres’ lineup for the near future actually seems pretty stable, save for one spot — third base. On paper, Machado looks like a great fit for a long-term in field which may feature Eric Hosmer initially, possibility Luis Urias at moment, top potential Fernando Tatis Jr.. At short and a four-time All-Star at dawn.

Harper’s fit isn’t so sterile in a crowded corner-outfield combination that already contains Hunter Renfroe, Wil Myers, Franmil Reyes and Franchy Cordero. But he is Bryce Harper — a potential franchise foundation. The Padres are all prepared to do so if they have to deal in their glut of outfielders.
