UFC 235: Jones vs. Smith occurred on Saturday in nevada, maybe not quite drawing on a full house, but amassing an extremely large terrace.
According to officials, UFC 235 drew a crowd of 14,790 into tmobile Arena, which has a capacity of 20,000 for Boxing and mixed martial arts events. Though it fell well short of a sellout, UFC 235 gathered a sizable gate of $4,035,156.50.
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones put his belt on the line but it wasn’t actually close. Jones took Smith the fight from the opening bell, leaving little doubt that he thoroughly mastered the fight, even with a two point deduction to get an illegal knee into his opponent’s mind.
Even the event featured the tournament with the belt being taken by Kamaru Usman out of Tyron Woodley. Similar to main eventer Jones, Usman ran away with Woodley with all the fight, dominating him from the bell to bell to turn into the first fighter to win an UFC championship.
As Robbie Lawler needed the fight to be stopped on the edge, askren battled back from the brink of defeat. Minding the tables, Askren eventually secured a choke on Lawler and the referee stopped the fight. It turned out to be a contentious stoppage, however, as Lawler was immediately awake as well as arguing.
