Johnson, 26, was advised to be paid an average salary of 9.069 million in 20-19 over the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. The Texans save full amount on their salary cap.
He had been placed on injured reserve last season after suffering a concussion in a Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots. It had been his second concussion in under monthly, since he also left Houston’s preseason match against the sanfrancisco 49ers on Aug. 19 after hitting his head on the area.
He also told the Houston Chronicle he was cleared by neurologists to return.
“They said I’m cleared, good to go and I’m in fantastic shape moving forward,” Johnson told the newspaper. “I’m feeling good. I will be ready to go next season”
Johnson played making 18 starts. He has 14 passes defensed, an interception and 122 tackles in four seasons.
“Kevin has had some tough luck the past couple of decades,” general director Brian Gaine said last week.
The free-agency market will be tested by johnson, when he does not sign elsewhere but the Texans could bring back the corner back on a contract.
