Jimmie Johnson enjoyed his most powerful run of the season in ISM Raceway Sunday, placing eighth after directing several laps and playing with the strategy .
Right-wing plate races, it had been Johnson’s best result since nearly winning at the Charlotte Roval in October of this past year.
The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series winner began in 15th, but quickly made his way in the top ten and also spent a fantastic part of the race for positions inside the top five.
“We need more. We need to find longer, however, on a short track where traction is therefore essential that our guys did a great job all weekend of attracting slightly more. Excited about that. We weathered the storm on two tires, on four and were left with a great high 10. ”
“No, it’s not a success, however it’s definitely a solid evening for your own Ally Chevrolet. These guys are working so hard at Hendrick Motorsports to get us more and we required a fantastic move in the right direction. I think at Vegas we were better than where we finished.
“Once we lost track position, we struggled the second half of the race. Atlanta was terrible, could ’t say anything else there. We’re learning weekly and that I think we have some catching up to do, but certainly a solid performance.”
He also had only good stuff to say about new crew leader Kevin Meendering, whose strategy calls got the No. 48 out front for a small number of laps at one point.
“Kevin called a terrific race, so it had been really tricky with strategy, two tires, four tires, our pit team had to correct mid pit stop one time and move from four to two and everyone reacted quite well. ”
