The Portuguese produced his latest master-class at Europe’s elite competition to bring the Italian side back from the verge of a last-16 leave against Atletico Madrid and reserve their place at the quarter finals.
Trailing 2-0 from the first leg at Spain, Ronaldo was facing as much as the prospect of a failure to reach at least the semi finals for the first time since 2010 – and only the 2nd time in 12 seasons.
But this happened…
His most recent outstanding performance implies that:
- Ronaldo has scored 124 goals in Europe’s elite club competition – that’s 18 free from second-placed Lionel Messi on the list of leading scorers. It’s also significantly a lot more than three-time finalists Atletico Madrid’s whole total.
- Ronaldo has scored eight Champions League hat tricks, the joint-most at the competition alongside Messi.
- Ronaldo remains in contention to add to his five Champions League names – merely Madrid legend Francisco Gento, together with six, has won European allies.
- It’s nearly four years as a team comprising Ronaldo was pumped from the Champions League and also he could still win the competition for a fourth consecutive season.
‘This Is the Reason Why they brought me here’
probably one of the costliest players of all time at the approach.
His remit has been, in large part, to help the Turin club win the Champions League.
“This was why Juventus attracted me here, to help things that they have not achieved previously,” said Ronaldo, who has scored 18 goals in his past 14 Champions League knock out appearances and was directly involved 76 aims in 7 7 knock out matches (62 goals, 14 assists).
“It was always likely to be a particular night and it was – not just for the aims but for the team.
“This is the mindset you need to win at the Champions League. We enjoyed a magical night. Atletico were a tricky team but we were strong too. We will see what will happen.”
Rio Ferdinand, a teammate of Ronaldo’s in their time together at Manchester United, told BT Sport:”Cristiano is actually a living football god also it is ridiculous that which he is doing.
“From the Champions League he has got every album you are able to see right now. Also it was also against an Atletico team that’s renowned for a excellent defence.”
Perhaps Juve finally resolved how to use Ronaldo?
There had been no doubts regarding his league form – he is the second-highest scorer in Serie A with 19 goals – but his reunite Europe had been below expectations for a person who has been the best scorer in the Champions League to the last six seasons.
Currently 34, he had been accustomed to being used sparingly by Real in order to ensure he was in summit competition to the latter stages of the summer season – in 2016 17 he scored 10 days in Champions League playoff games independently.
However, Juve hadn’t followed that model.
For the last two seasons, Real had awarded him a break in a few domestic games. In that point he was rested for 10 La Liga matches, missing another 10 through suspension or injury. He did not play some of the six Copa del Rey games last season, and only two the previous campaign.
Last season he was left out of a La Liga trip to Las Palmas three days before he scored two, including a famous bicycle kick, at Real’s 3-0 triumph in Juventus. Back in 2016 17 he was rested for a game in Sporting Gijon and 3 days after scored a hat-trick contrary to Bayern Munich to ship them inside the semi finals.
But perhaps Juve, who’ve won every Italian league title since moving stadiums at 2011 and so are 18 points clear at the top out this time, have finally realised how to control their celebrity forward.
He has just been rested once all season – to Friday’s 4-1 win over Udinese, their latest game.
Before that, he had played every domestic game – 26 Serie A games and two at the Coppa Italia. Of those 26 league games – including a single replacement appearance – he has played 90 minutes from 23.
He has nearly played as many league moments this season (2,239) – along with 11 games remaining – because he did in 2017 18 for Real (2.297).
However, after getting rested in preparation for that which was definitely the most crucial game of Juve’s season, he delivered convincingly.
When he sits out a few more league games between now and the close of the summer season, the Italians may be the team to beat in Europe.
Five additional iconic Ronaldo Champions League minutes
Ronaldo Did this prior to course – Here’s a reminder of some of the renowned Champions League nights:
Real Madrid 3-0 Wolfsburg (3-2 agg) – 2015-16 quarter-final second leg
Real came in to the next leg in their quarterfinal using Wolfsburg 2-0 down but 18 minutes in the Bernabeu game, Ronaldo had scored two to level the tie and his 77th-minute freekick sent them in the semi finals.
Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, for example just two goals in extra time, as Real Madrid knocked Bayern Munich outside in the quarter finals. His third, a tap-in from Marcelo’s cross, left him the first player to score 100 Champions League aims.
Real Madrid 3-0 Atletico Madrid – 2016 17 Semi Final initial leg
Ronaldo’s next Champions League game produced the following hat-trick, his seventh at the championship. He performed with all three of the touches within the playground as Real defeated their local rivals at the early leg of this semi-final.
Juventus 1 4 Real Madrid – 2016 17 Last
Ronaldo scored twice at the Cardiff final against his prospective employers, the third Champions League final he had scored in – all successes. He managed 10 goals in the last five games of the season’s championship, including both hat tricks mentioned above.
Juventus 0-3 Real Madrid – 2017 18 quarter-final initial leg
Arguably Ronaldo’s greatest goal since he flew into the Turin atmosphere to ship a barely believable bicycle kick past Gianluigi Buffon in last season’s quarter final. The motive brought him a standing ovation from Juve’s fans – a minute which surely had an iNFLuence in his decision to join them a few months later. He netted twice in the game, becoming the first person to score in 10 consecutive Champions League matches.
