Daniel Ballard is a regular in Arsenal's under-23 team

O’Neill states Ballard has had’rapid rise’

Defender Ballard, who’s just a regular in ’s under-23 team, has got four Under21 caps.

One of the Under21 looks watched Ballard score a late winner at a qualifier against Iceland last October.

Together with centre-backs Gareth McAuley and Aaron Hughes both today 3 9, O’Neill has opted to bring Ballard in to the group.

“Daniel Ballard has received a rapid rise . He was at the under-19s last year and did nicely and we encouraged him into the Under21s for the past couple of matches of their effort and he has been playing regularly at in under-23 flat,” added the director.

“We’re bringing him in for the experience as well however it’s an indication of where we are at the moment as Gareth McAuley and Aaron Hughes aren’t going to go on forever and are playing regularly in their clubs too.

“So I thought it was very important to attract Daniel in as over another 12 18 months he’s got the possibility to be a regular in the group .”

O’Neill’concern’ over squad’s lack of current action

Motherwell keeper Carson’s lack since he continues to get over heavy vein thrombosis means Leeds’ Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Norwich’s Michael McGovern and Conor Hazard will battle for the goalkeeper’s jersey.

But, none of O’Neill’s three keepers are currently regulars with their clubs that the manager admitted on Tuesday”isn’t the perfect scenario”.

“It’s a situation that is out of my hands,” added the Northern Ireland boss.

“We’ve had this scenario before. Michael [McGovern] played virtually the majority of the effort for Russia when he was not starting at Norwich and he’d played and never let us down.

“Whoever goes in, whether they’re first selection for their own club or not, they are going to have to handle being first-choice for us.”

And the keepers are far from being the sole players who aren’t getting much firstteam actions with their golf clubs.

“I think there’s 15 or 16 players at that 27 that did not start to their golf clubs at the weekend so that is always a concern,” added O’Neill.

“We only have to hope that when they arrive in that they’ve got enough in their own legs to be able to look after the 2 matches too.”
