Despite producing a strong start to the next round of the WRC, the Finn then suffered a catalogue of issues which meant he and also co-driver Miikka Anttila came close to leaving empty-handed.
“It’been the funniest rally to get four points ever! I’t never worked so hard for these points,” Latvala reflected at the finish.
Even the duo’s issues started late Friday when they were made to retire their Yaris WRC having an alternator issue. They rejoined on Saturday and 2 point wins at the morning let them move up to eighth place.
But they lost more ground when they were given a one-minute time penalty on Saturday night when Latvala was adjudged to have illegally worked on the car (trying to connect the back anti-roll pub ) at a light fitting zone.
Even the duo headed into Sunday’s platforms hoping to push their way back up the leader board but their bid was struck by further play when they damaged the back protector and radiator onto their car.
Despite attempting a temporary fix and completing an exhausting 500-metre dash down a steep hillside to a river to top up the radiator, then they were not able to push at the Electricity Stage and improve eighth place.
“At the very end of the next stage of the day [Sunday]we struck any bedrock with the sump shield. We thought we had no chance to keep I said we could ’t even stop trying at this point,” Latvala clarified.
“The sump guard was just half-fixed therefore that I couldn’t even drive fast in the Electricity Period. But we left it to the ending. There are a great deal of things happening this weekend, and the next rally will soon be a little wealthier!
