Before Charles Leclerc’s dad died in June 2017, his son told him a small white lie.
Leclerc was at the middle of his Formula 2 year, and a member of the Ferrari driver academy, also being widely tipped for a graduation to match 1 the following year.
He knew his dad, Herve, was close to the end. So Charles told Herve he had been guaranteed an F1 driveway for 2018. Just he hadn’t.
“This turned out somewhat earlier in the day than I’d really signed,” Leclerc recalls,”but in the end I didn’t lie because I am here and now in Ferrari, which feels incredible.”
He says that his father’s ambition for his child was”to maintain F1 also to be world champion. I have not done that yet but I shall work to realise his fantasy “
It may not be far .
This year will be just Leclerc’s moment in F1, and he has a chair at the greatest team whatsoever. It’s about as strong an endorsement of his potential as it’s likely to get.
It’s extremely unusual for Ferrari to choose a driver thus early in his career. They typically want to employ experienced drivers, ideally with an established winning skill. So to choose Leclerc – to restore the 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen – says an awful lot about how impressive Leclerc had been within his debut season with Sauber this past year, and also good Ferrari expect this 21-year-old from Monaco to become.
In fact, Leclerc has been accepted by Ferrari earlier in his career than any driver since Gilles Villeneuve at the conclusion of 1977. The Canadian went on to carve himself a place as one of the wonderful F1 legends in four short seasons until his departure in a crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix.
Can Leclerc’s talent take precisely exactly the same bracket? He’s been doing enough in his career to date to show it is perhaps not a ridiculous question.

The battle with Vettel
Parachuting Leclerc to Ferrari for 2019 provides an opportunity to start to answer the question, for he could be team-mate to four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. The German is just one of F1’s elite, but Leclerc’s potential is this that most expect him to provide Vettel a run for his money.
Their performances from pre season testing just simplifies this stage. Their fastest laps ended up only 0.01 minutes apart and, over race distances, and their entire times were nearly indistinguishable.
Ferrari have acted early to use to dampen down discussion on the issue of an internal battle between their own drivers. New team manager Mattia Binotto, the former technical manager who has substituted Maurizio Arrivabene after the mistakes which blighted Ferrari’s 2018, has stated that at”particular situations our priority would be Sebastian”.
Binotto says:”When you have your goals clear from the beginning, you don’t make mistakes whenever you may have an ambiguous situation.
“The two will soon be liberated to fight. We won’t ask Charles to be slow down or Sebastian to be speediest. We need both of them to conduct to the max.
“However should there any ambiguous situations at the beginning of the summer season, Sebastian could be the main one with more experience (and it has had) years . He won championships so he is our champion.”
Leclerc is slipping himself into Ferrari and has been very careful to keep away from stoking any controversy. But at precisely exactly the same time he is not troubling to hide his ambitions.
“Clearly I am glad if I get accustomed to this car as swiftly as you possibly can, and then that I am straight on the pace,” he says. “I am realistic, too. It’s just my 2nd season in F1. I have a great deal to learn, and there’s a long road ahead.
“I can’t hide that I am pushing to be as ready as possible for the first race, of course if Mattia has got the situation to manage two quick drivers, then it’s really a fantastic indication for me.
“However, for now I am only focusing on myselftrying to boost every lap I am doing in the auto. It’s a high team, also there are procedures which can be dissimilar to the team I had been previously. There is a little bit of adaptation”
Ferrari’s hesitation to promote youthful drivers has in the past at least partly been based on questions about how they might cope from the highly pressured situation of forcing for F1’s most famous team.
F 1 is really a merciless environment which brutally exposes any flaws, and some drivers wilt under the light upon them.
Even Vettel has proven exposed to this pressure, since the series of mistakes that unravelled his name campaign this past year proved.
So Binotto’s remarks about the way the drivers will be managed, at least , have been in lots of ways, a clever approach.
It works for Vettel, as it serves as an overt, public statement the team is supporting him as their lead driver, potentially cutting down the worries that might happen to be a contributory factor to some of his mistakes last season.
Plus it lessens the immediate pressure on Leclerc, by effectively saying, don’t fret overly much about any desire that you are feeling to beat Vettel from the off; simply take time, this really is not your year anyway.
Grace under stress
It was seen just how Leclerc will cope with this new measure upward in his career, but so far the signs are he has the emotional fortitude and endurance to manage.
After having a dominant career in the categories, Leclerc started his debut season with Sauber last year having quite substantial expectations . However at the first three races he had been unconvincing. He was not first that quick, and he left a few unprovoked errors as well.
But a change in approach to the set-up of the car for the fourth race at Azerbaijan transformed his season.
Before that, there had been evidence that was a man more than usually immune to the joys of the outside world impinging on his pro performance.
Three days after his father’s passing in that summer of 20 17, Leclerc had to race at Baku at Formula 2. The personal misery can only be imagined, but he put his car on pole by more than half a second, also won the first race. That meant a beginning at eighth for the next race, he won, although a 10-second penalty uttered him to next.
“It had been very tough to take,” Leclerc remembers,”because I lost him to the Wednesday before the race so it was extremely fresh.
“The only thing I told myself was seeing me race for him was definitely everything and he definitely would not desire me to be destroyed prior to the race and also do a bad race.
“The only thing he would want me to complete is to win the race for himso I was really happy to have honoured this way”
His father is the not the sole person close to him Leclerc has lost on the way upward. He had been additionally God-son to the former F1 driver Jules Bianchi, who perished in July 2015 of head injuries sustained in a crash during the 2014 Western Grand Prix.
Bianchi’s dad and Leclerc’s father were best friends, also Jules, just eight years older, was a your government to Charles than the usual god father.
If he is primarily out to win for himself, then they are never away from his own mind. Leclerc heads in to the main season of his young life wearing a helmet which carries tributes to men.
“I think of them each time I win a race,” he says,”and I am sure they’re up there looking at me grinning.”
