Inside his mind, it doesn’t preclude the Giants from making noise this year.
“Indeed and truly, you can acquire as you’re building,” Gettleman said Monday on a conference call with colleagues to talk about the trade of star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
The Giants received original and also third-round draft selections along with third year security Jabrill Peppers in exchange for the Pro Bowl receiver.
The Giants have signed soon-to-be 31-year-old wide recipient Golden ta te because Beckham’s replacement.
It renders their short and long-term plans fuzzy.
“We are building. The aim of this will be to acquire as many games as you possibly can every season,” Gettleman said. We were 3-13 once I shot over. We were 5-11 final year — 1 2 of those games have been a touchdown or less. We’re building. I actually don’t know just why that is a question.”
Gettleman declined to provide further details for where this company is headed after trading its biggest star following a sixth season in seven years minus the play offs. He did indicate they aren’t freelancing.
“Trust me, we’ve got a plan. And over time, you have to be patient. Everybody wants answers today. We are living in an instant gratification society. Immediate satisfaction world and everyone wants answers today,” Gettleman said. “Through the years, you’ll see it. You’ve got to trust it.”
Gettleman insisted he wasn’t distressed to trade Beckham. It was purely a football choice. He said it was no specific incident in the seven weeks since Beckham signed a then-record $98.5 million deal with the Giants.
“There is no intrigue. There’s no he said, she explained,” Gettleman said. “None of that stuff.”
Gettleman looked at the starting point for Beckham’s value as equivalent into the franchise label, which would return two first round selections in return when he signed elsewhere on the label. The Giants opinion Peppers as equivalent to a first-round pick. He was a first-round selection by the Browns in 2017. They also got the No. 17 overall selection and a third-round pick.
That was a much better deal than anything the Sanfrancisco 49ers or even Buffalo Bills presented. Gettleman known as the Adventures and had several discussions over time with 49ers overall John Lynch.
“when I said publicly two, we did not sign him to trade him but obviously things changed,” Gettleman said. “Frankly what changed is another team made a deal we couldn’t refuse.”
Gettleman had said in the past you don’t give up on talent. He does not view the Beckham commerce as such because they did not cut him or get a marginal return. They received legitimate price.
The Giants are now moving forward with no most popular player. They also are running back it this season with Eli Manning at dusk, and also are optimistic with just how that they ended last season — if Beckham was sidelined with a quad injury — that it can continue into this year.
Manning and the Giants averaged 25.5 points a game over the final four games of the season. Manning also threw 1-3 of the 21 touchdown passes in the second half of the season after the offensive line stabilized.
Gettleman is sold on the two time Super Bowl winner, even though he is 38 years old and coming off a few down seasons.
“So, again, this narrative that Eli is over paid and can’t play is a crock. I’m letting you know,” Gettleman said. “At the conclusion of your afternoon you have to express Gettleman has gone outside of the mind or else he knows what he is talking about if he evaluates players. That’s really what it is. That’s really where it’s at. And I’m OK if you disagree with me personally. That is ok .”
Manning is scheduled to earn $17 million this season. He earned a $5 million roster bonus by being around the roster Sunday.
However while Beckham and Vernon were traded and Collins left free agency, there is no doubt about Manning.
“What I’m telling you,” Gettleman said,”is when you turn around and take a look at what he is making at this time and shop across the league and determine what quarterbacks are making, if you should be in my shoes you’d say… the way he finished the entire year and what he could be making, there really wasn’t a choice to produce.”
