ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Since decided to call it a career, most folks in the vicinity of the league were quick to convey that the Denver Broncos have experienced a significant quarterback problem.

True enough. However, as theyrsquo;ve cycled through four distinct starters at the location at the last two seasons it’s been clear that they ’ve struggled almost as much to set a frequent set of offensive linemen in front of those quarterbacks, whose chances succeed glancing behind lines which often struggled to protect them.

And in a number of ways, it can be an issue well before Manning’s retirement and continues to be on the front burner years later because the Broncos turn into Joe Flacco at dusk.

“With no doubt, we all ’re hoping to get continuity inside,” said Broncos president of football operations/general director John Elway. “It’s a objective of ours. … We’ll continue to try and change. ”

Last season was just another chapter in a long narrative. The Broncos used six distinct combinations overall on the offensive line and at least two distinct starters at four places — left guard, centre, right guard and right tackle — along the way to a 6-10 finish.

And while injuries and movement up front is really a bit of a football fact of life across the league — that the New England Patriots regularly shuffle things up front, and the la Rams will be the only team from the league last season to own all five starters on the offensive line play all 16 games — that the Broncos’ struggles at quarterback have reflected their struggles to create a mix they like up front.

“” I feel as though it will soon be a good set,” said Ja’Wuan James, whom the Broncos left the highest-paid right handle

Subsequent to the transaction for Flacco, James was among the Broncos’ original targets in free agency with a four-year, $51 million deal.

It’s also a big reason they worked so tough to persuade Mike Munchak, who interviewed for the Broncos’ head coaching job earlier this season, to combine Vic Fangio’therefore staff as offensive line coach. Munchak, a Hall of Fame protector within his playing career, is among the most admired line coaches in the league, and the Broncos have also hired one of their very best linemen on the last 2 decades — Chris Kuper — as helper line coach.

Kuper has been with all the Miami Dolphins for the past 3 seasons and has coached James.

But similar to at quarterback, where the Broncos don’t currently have a player at the position they hailed, the team is not a really home grown unit up front . Since the 2013 draft, that has been Elway’s in his existing endeavor, five of the eight offensive linemen that the group has hailed are no longer with the team.

The set of those departed linemen currently includes former centre Matt Paradis, who signed with Carolina in free agency last week after the Broncos had questions about his recovery from the fractured ankle that ended his 2018 season.

And on the list of five who would be starters for the up coming season, left tackle Garett Bolles and centre Connor McGovern are former draft picks.

Asked last week how important it was to allow the Broncos to set a frequent set together in front of Flacco,” Elway only said “very important,” and Fangio promptly added, “Simple question, simple answer.”

But with a 34-year-old starting quarterback in Flacco, who is the centerpiece of these offseason work for this aspect, the Broncos understand they need to try .

“there’s no question it is very critical for all of us to try to shield Joe,” Elway said. “Having played this position, if you provide them with protection, chances of being successful will be a ton better”
