From Trevor McIntyre: Chris Eubank Jr. gets his sights set on a unification fight against WBA ‘routine ’ super middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez in the place of a rematch against Billy Joe Saunders, who no longer has a world title belt after he vacated his WBO middleweight strap last calendar year.
Even though IBO isn’t considered to be a major world title in the view of some fans, Eubank Jr. considers it’s a title that he may use to find a unification fight with Canelo.
“[A Saunders rematch] will always interest me due to our history, but he doesn’t have a belt, if he has a belt it’ll be different. ‘This is why I got in to the sport, for a world champion, to collect the belts, to fight the greatest and now there ’s a lot of guys on the market that will be great fights for me personally who have those belts,” Eubank believed to No Filter Boxing.
Canelo is fighting next against IBF middleweight champion Danny Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) in a unification fight on May 4 on DAZN. In case Canelo wins that fight, he’s likely to fight a third game against Gennady Golovkin in September of this past year. Canelo’so schedule is available to May 20 20, however. Which could be a very good time for them to return to super middleweight to fight Eubank Jr. in a unification fight. The likely best fight for Canelo in 168 will be Eubank Jr.. WBA Super World super middleweight champion Callum Smith may possibly be the very best fighter in the 168 pound branch, but he’s been able to build the same sort of attention in his struggles as Eubank Jr.. Perhaps one reason behind this is Smith is reserved, and not as much of an outgoing fighter as Eubank Jr., also he’s little trash talker.
“[Canelo] is the very well-known fighter on the planet right now and he’s in and around my own weight,” Eubank Jr. said. “So that’s a fight that long as all stays on track, that is inevitable we’ll share a ring,” Eubank Jr. said.
Eubank Jr. has won his past 2 conflicts in beating DeGale along with JJ McDonagh after a 12 round decision loss to former WBA super middleweight champion George Groves at the World Boxing Super Series tournament final last season in February. Eubank Jr. had problems getting passed Groves’ powerful jab to land his shots. When Eubank Jr. was able to get near enough to throw his shots, he was over powered by Groves’ size. Eubank Jr. has fought most of his career at middleweight, also he’s not really a genuine super middleweight in terms of his frame.
Most likely the best performance of his livelihood, Eubank Jr. schooled the shell of DeGale in beating him from your scores 114111, 115-111 and 117-108. Regrettably for Eubank Jr., he didn’t get the credit that he otherwise would have received if the both of these had fought each other a couple of years ago until DeGale’so fight with Badou Jack in January 2017. The fight was played with a 12 round attraction, but it was one which a lot of boxing fans felt that Jack needs to have won. DeGale was never the same following the fight.
Eubank Jr. lost to Saunders by way of a 12 round split decision in 2014. Eubank Jr. would like to avenge that loss at some point, but perhaps not now.
