Eight-time winner Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Miami Open due to a knee injury.
American Williams reached round three to Friday with victory on Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson, merely the seventh game she’s got completed in 2019.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner was set to manage Wang Qiang from the last 32 but the Chinese 27-year-old now gets a bye.
“I’m disappointed to withdraw from the Miami Open due to a left knee injury,” said Williams, 3-7.
Williams has now withdrawn from two successive WTA events, after her retirement in past week’s tournament in Indian Wells with a viral disease.
Her past Grand Slam win arrived at the 20 17 Australian Open, moving her one behind Margaret Court’s listing of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
