Following Ben Askren’s contentious first-round submission win over Robbie Lawler at UFC 235 earlier this month, UFC President Dana White made it understood he wanted a direct rematch reserved as soon as possible.
However, only a couple of weeks after, White has changed his tune.
“[Lawler vs. Askren 2] may be the struggle that I need to accomplish and, you understand , we started working on that stuff and then we started planning yet another direction,” White revealed in an appearance on the most recent .
So if perhaps not the rematch, what’s next for Askren? After all, the man known as “Funky” didn’t fly all of the way to London in hopes of picking a fight with the winner of Darren Until vs. Masvidal.
But, after Masvidal, that wound knocking out Till, turned right to a heated confrontation with fellow UFC welterweight Leon Edwards backstage, it looked all but certain the UFC would check out throw both in to the Octagon next.
Not so quickly.
According to White, the promotion is in fact holding off on booking the grudge game in favor of Askren’therefore idea.
“You understand [Masvidal vs. Edwards] is always going to be there,” White stated. “Masvidal is ranked number five right now, Edwards is number 10. So, we are working on something for Masvidal and Edwards, although not each other. The hatred between both isn’t moving away. After the time is right, we’ll make it occur.
“Exactly what we’re actually discussing is now Ben Askren vs. Masvidal right now. ”
Askren later took to his Twitter to release a video in a reaction to White’s comments earlier asserting Masvidal won’t even accept the struggle.
“Dana came out and said this morning that they’re seeking for me and Masvidal. I said yes . It didn’t even require me more than 10 minutes to say ‘Of course. Jorge, let’therefore perform this. You feel you’re a gangster. ’ Well, I hear he’s becoming cold feet and also doesn’t even want to do it. He also doesn’t even WISh to fight me because he’s scared.
“Jorge, tell them people in the event that you’re scared. In the event that you’re scared, I’ll move on to somebody else. In the event that you’re not scared, then June 8 in Chicago [at UFC 238]. I’m free, you’absolutely free, let’therefore perform this. It’s very easy. The winner is probably going to get a title shot Jorge. Therefore , there’s a little at stake and I think it’d be in your very best interest to stop being a chicken and only say . ”
Masvidal has to respond to Askren’s-video.
