The Euro 20 20 qualifiers began with a bang and – fittingly after a fantastic week ended with much more drama.
Two incredible finishes took place simultaneously – one in Basel plus yet one in Oslo – as 10 moments of insanity produced six goals and two 3-3 draws.
Denmark fought back from 3-0 down to draw Switzerland, though a see-saw match in Norway ended against the hosts too nabbing a point against neighbours Sweden.
Here’s the way it unfolded…
8-4 mins – Switzerland 3 1 Denmark
Switzerland has to have been convinced of getting a 2nd win against their two Euro 20 20 qualifiers after Remo Freuler, Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo put them in to a commanding 3-0 lead with more than 15 minutes to playwith.
When Denmark defender Mathias Jorgensen ghosted in round the back of a sleepy Swiss defence to head in, it seemed probably be of little consequence.
However, the Huddersfield player, racing to the net and also catching the ball to return to the halfway line, clearly still believed…
8 8 mins – Switzerland 32 Denmark
If the Korean weren’t already getting worried then things shifted on 88 seconds. Christian Gytkjaer took good advantage of a little more slack defending, crossing a 2nd in to a vacant net to get the Danes and setting up a tense finale…
90+1 mins – Norway 23 Sweden
. . .back at Oslo, matters got better to its traffic. Since the clock ticked past 90 minutes, Quaison led in Claesson’s pass to place the Swedes ahead for its first time at the match.
An improbable victory appeared to have now been ensured in injury time…
90+6 mins – Norway 3-3 Sweden
… however, the day’s drama did not end there. Deep into stoppage time, using the Swedes begging for its last whistle, Real Madrid youngster Martin Odegaard chose a last gasp corner for Norway.
Substitute Ola Kamara climbed to meet with up with the delivery and nod at a late equaliser which sent the vast majority of a packaged Ullevaal Stadion to raptures.
