“It is essential to us we have relationships with your players where we maintain things in house and contract talks are a huge part of this,” Roseman said when asked about the timing of such a possible deal. “But obviously, with Carson here long term is the goal and we are going to work at that.”
Discussing at the courtyard at the upscale Arizona Biltmore, home for the NFL’s electricity representatives for the week, Roseman stated that direction has been talking about the prospects of a long-term deal for Wentz for the last couple of decades.
“I think that as soon as you find the sort of impact he could have to the field, the type of player he is, the form of work ethic he’s got, you get started planning about the way you’re going to create a team around a highly-paid player at the position,” he said. “Clearly we’re getting to the point where that’s going to be a reality, so some of the decisions which people now have to make are going to be influenced from that. We’re trying to plan from putting more young players to our platform .”
The Eagles did not waver in their commitment to Wentz even though Nick Foles‘ heroics over the last two seasons.
He had another season cut short due to injury this past year after having a stress fracture had been discovered in his back in December. Roseman declined to enter into specifics about Wentz’s recovery, however, instead of”all of those [injured] men, and they are working hard, we’re exceptionally optimistic about where we come in this area.”
Wentz has previously expressed optimism he will be ready once the offseason training program begins in April.
The Eagles can exercise patience when it comes to re-upping Wentz, as the team has him in order at a reasonable number for the next couple seasons. They will have until Dec. 31 to exercise his fifth-year choice for 2020, they almost certainly will. Wentz’s wages that year is very likely to be about $23 million. Maintaining off onto a monster contract would allow them to gear up for another title run using Wentz at a minimal cap number, and determine how things move health-wise before investing major dollars .
The downside is that the longer they wait, greater Wentz’s price label becomes if he lives up to expectation.
“In case Wentz is ultimately who you think he is, you are likely above $ 3-5 million annually when it is all done and said if you wait patiently , because Russell Wilson is likely to get there on his second contract,” said cap expert Joel Corry.
The timing of a fresh deal is still to be determined, however, the Eagles are prepping for what they view as an inevitability.
“you want a team led by a franchise-type quarterback,” Roseman said. “We know that people have that in Carson, so today what exactly are we all going to do him around to make sure we are able to lasted to try and compete for championships.”
