Simona Halep moved closer to reclaiming the entire world number 1 ranking after defeating China’s Wang Qiang 64 7-5 to reach the Miami Open semi-finals.
The 27-year-old from Romania has been 5-1 down in the second set but fought by winning six consecutive matches.
“My trainer said I was rushing a bit so I managed to calm down,” she said.
“This was great information. I started well and played some smart tennis in the next group, she started to raise her game.”
Halep converted seven of eight break points and struck 2-4 winners compared to 14 in Wang.
She will play the winner of the all-Czech competition between world number five Karolina Pliskova and also Marketa Vondrousova in the second round.
The other Semi Final will be played between Anett Kontaveit of Estonia and also Australia’s Ashleigh Barty.
