As each NHL team is eliminated from playoff contention — either mathematically or by dropping the postseason — we’ll look at why its quest for the Stanley Cup fell short in 201819, combined with three keys to its own off season, impact prospects for 2019 20 and a way-too-early forecast for what next season will hold.

The reasonable solution is that the 201819 Vancouver Canucks couldn’t remain fit in key areas in the lineup, with veteran defenseman Alexander Edler (51 games played with ) and Chris Tanev (55) and forward Sven Baertschi (2-4 ) and also Brandon Sutter (26) all overlooking significant time whereas others were dinged up here and there. The Canucks were the fifth-most injured team this season, via NHL Injury Viz.

But the big picture answer is that this was a post-Sedins transition season, with a team which needed twelve players 25-and-under who saw regular time and also whose three best players were 23-and-under. Look no farther than the Canucks’ record when trailing after the initial phase: 3-22-5, setting them in exactly the exact same neighborhood as lottery fodder New Jersey and Los Angeles.

There’s alot that might have gone — and the tease of play off contention before regression was a bummer to Canucks fans — but let us focus on what went : Elias Pettersson, Calder Trophy favorite, has given this city its own second franchise player under a year when it said goodbye to the last two.
