PHOENIX — The Pittsburgh Steelers had apparent reasons to exchange wide receiver Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders. His presence in Pittsburgh became untenable after he skipped work and disparaged the company.

Brown wanted a brand fresh contract the Steelers were not going to offer him. And keeping an all pro malcontent on the roster lacked stunting the growth of young players such as wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

But some decision makers have been talking the potential consequences of this puzzling end to the Brown saga.

Multiple high-ranking sources at the owners meetings told that Brown forcing his way out of a contract with three years left could set a precedent that players could do exactly what they desire. One source went up to to say that Brown essentially treating himself like a free agent, then getting a brand fresh deal with via trade, is”reckless” for teams expecting players to honor contracts.

Other star players see this and might want to do the exact same,and rdquo; one source said. “” I understand the Steelers had a difficult situation and needed to remove him. Nevertheless that they had other options. ”

One option was straightforward: Maintain Brown on the roster, then fine if he skipped minicamp, betting any retirement threats will be vacant because Brown would invest more than $11 million into prorated signing-bonus money.

Pittsburgh had landed under contract for three years at a minimum of 38.925 million. Now, Brown has a three-year deal with values 50.125 million, including $30.125 million guaranteed.

Much of it is surprising by a well-respected franchise famous for noise enterprise.

“it had been an incredibly un-Steeler-like movement,” yet another source said.

Coach stated the partnership with Brown conducted its course. General director Kevin Colbert cited the Steelers’ upgraded draft funding. The team now holds four of the top 83 selections in April’s draft.

Running Le’Veon Bell sat out the 2018 season without assessing his own franchise tag because he felt the team’s contract arrangement — assuring only the signing up bonus — was a real issue for players, especially running backs with shorter shelf lives. Bell signed up a four-year, $52.5 million bargain with all the New York Jets from the very first week of free agency.

How Bell sees it, aggressive pushes for guarantees won’t end anytime soon.

“I’t seen a lot of injuries not to appreciate this,” Bell said about the need for higher warranties. A b did everything he felt was best for him personally. My situation was different, but we just wanted to get our fair value. ”

Several veteran agents, nevertheless, say Brown’s methods aren’t reasonable for most of the league.
