Greg Schiano is stepping down as the New England Patriots‘ defensive coordinator, mentioning a”need to spend time on my faith and loved ones.”

Schiano announced his decision Thursday in a joint statement with coach Bill Belichick.

“This is not the result of any 1 event, but rather a recognition that I need to invest more time on my beliefs and family,” Schiano said. “I don’t desire to check back years from now and wish I’d done things differently. And so, I’m taking away time from the match to recalibrate my priorities.”

Schiano was hired with the Patriots significantly less than two weeks past.

“I honor Coach Schiano greatly and love his gifts to our own team and staff,” Belichick said in his statement. “He is a good friend who we support “
