FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Greg Schiano is stepping down from his position on the New England Patriots‘ coaching staff, mentioning a”need to spend more time on my faith and loved ones.”

Schiano, whose hire hadn’t ever been officially announced by the team , announced his decision Thursday in a joint announcement together with trainer Bill Belichick.

“This is not the consequence of almost any one event, but rather a recognition that I want to invest more time on my own beliefs and family,” Schiano said. “I really don’t desire to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. And so, I’m taking time away from the match to recalibrate my priorities.”

Schiano was hired by the Patriots less than two weeks ago, even though team never given what his role would be. It was widely assumed he’d play with a lead role on defense as the team substituted playcaller Brian Flores, who was hired since Miami Dolphins head coach following this summer season.

“I admire Coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his gifts to our own staff and team,” Belichick said in his announcement. “He is a friend that we support completely.”

It’s a magnificent twist of events, since Belichick had raved about Schiano in a meeting with Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski that aired Thursday on the”Basketball and Beyond with Coach K” series on sirius xm.

“He’s an incredibly experienced and outstanding fundamental trainer,” Belichick said in the interview, that has been listed at some point before Sunday. “He’s a good teacher and it has a lot of practical knowledge in both the college and pro game. … I think he’ll be an excellent addition.”

Schiano was about the cusp to be named University of Tennessee head trainer in 2017. However, the university reversed course after public outcry among Tennessee fans, with some citing his connection with the Jerry Sandusky age at Penn State. Belichick had given his public aid for Schiano.

Schiano’s death comes one day after former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo (2008-15) announced that he was joining the group coaching team.

Schiano’s resignation, in conjunction together with having an skilled offensive planner in Josh McDanielsthat may lead Belichick to take on more defensive coordinator-type responsibilities in 20-19.

The Patriots have observed five trainers leave their team after superbowl LIII.
