It’therefore somewhat disappointing that Callum Smith, the most effective fighter in the middleweight division at this time, is due to fighting undercards instead of headlining their or her own card. Hearn’s two options for Callum is to battle on your own Joshua-Miller card along with your Usyk-Takam card. Callum needs some extra big wins, and he wants to create more noise on social media as well as in interviews by trash talking more. Callum is more on the side compared to his own brother Liam Smith. Based on Callum’s big win over Groves and capturing the World Boxing Super Series championship, it’s somewhat strange that he’s perhaps not headlining their or her own card in Liverpool.

This is going to probably be the 28-year-old Smith’s first fight as winning the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight tournament this past year on September 28 in stopping WBA 168 lb. Champion George Groves in the seventh round at the King Abdullah Sports City, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Hearn states a unification struggle between Callum and David Benavidez is possible this past year. Benavidez will soon be facing World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell next. The winner of that struggle is designed to defend against WBC mandatory Avni Yildirim, as dictated by the WBC, however, Hearn states a unification struggle between Callum and the Dirrell-Benavidez competition will supersede that.

“With this year, but perhaps not next,” Hearn said to IFL TV about Callum Smith possibly fighting David Benavidez. “There’s talk about Callum boxing AJ’s undercard [on June 1]. We’re becoming a small logjam right now. So we’ve got to sort out that in the upcoming few days. Callum will likely be present on Saturday [for your Liam Smith vs. Sam Eggington card at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England]. We may have some thing sorted out by then. But at this time he’s either fighting May 17th or 25 or June 1 st card at Madison Square Garden. Callum vs. Benavidez is still a fantastic fight. It’ll become considered a small logjam, however, the unification [between Dirrell vs. Benavidez winner against Callum Smith] will supersede that,” Hearn stated.

Hearn didn’t say anything about who Callum would be fighting at his first defense of the WBA belt. If Hearn picks out among those contenders in the World Boxing Association’s top 15 ranks, it’ll be just one of those guys that Smith defends against in May or June:

— Fedor Chudinov

— Bilal Akkawy

— David Lemieux

— Zach Parker

— Rocky Fielding

— Vincent Feigenbutz

— Jayde Mitchell

— Erik Bazinyan

— Zac Dunn

— Julio Alamos

— Derrick Webster

— Vladimir Shishkin

— Aidos Yerbossynuly
