This year, this player was linebacker Thomas Davis.
Looking for an edge in the push for a potential Super Bowl series, the Chargers included an experienced, grizzled veteran in Davis.
Even the 36-year-old outside linebacker had spent his entire career using the Carolina Panthers, however he resigned from his safe place in moving to the West Coast for an opportunity to come back to this superbowl.
Davis also had some ties with all the Chargers to help direct him out West. He played with assistant defensive backs coach Chris Harris when he was a refuge with the Panthers. Chargers linebackers coach Richard Smith and defensive backs coach Ron Milus also were on the coaching team in Carolina when he was a person.
Mostly, Davis said he was attracted into the Chargers because he thinks the team is close to winning a championship, and he wishes to be a part of it.
“” I feel like that I still have alot left in the tank,” Davis said. “I am one of the more athletic linebackers on this particular group. I believe like [with] the knowledge and wisdom about this match that I have been in a position to learn out of a whole lot of veteran guys through the years, I can definitely help some of those younger guys with this defense. Just whatever I can add and anything I can bring, I am ready to accomplish and just come in and start to become the ultimate team mate. ”
Perryman re signed with the Chargers in a yearlong deal at the beginning of free agency.
Part of Davis’ task would be to function as mentor for a young but talented linebacker group.
“I’m excited for him to get in here so I can pick his brainand see exactly what he sees and only get his take on football in general. ”
However, the Chargers also feel that Davis still will playwith, along with the stats reveal.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Davis, who was suspended for its first four matches of 2018 for violating the league’s performance-enhancing medicine policy, ended with 79 tackles and six pass breakups at 12 matches for the Panthers last season. He’s penciled in to start at weakside linebacker out and was introduced to help improve a Chargers defense which at times fought to defend the jog.
The Chargers allowed only 106 rushing yards per game during the regular season, No. 9 at the NFL. However, the New England Patriots conducted for 155 yards in a run away victory over the Chargers within a AFC divisional-round playoff match earlier this past year.
The Chargers had to play with seven defensive backs most of the game defensively because of injuries at the linebacker position.
Davis also offers played big playoff matches, including a superbowl for the Panthers after a 15-1 regular season in 2015.
“He brings alot to the table for all of us ,” Telesco claimed. “… He’s still playing at an incredibly significant amount for 14 years in the league. That’s one thing you have to check in — is he still playing in a higher level? And he is. ”
Added Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn: “I love the way in which he comes back and gets off cubes, so I presume he could help our conduct defense tremendously. How he plays with the match, you can’t even have enough guys with that type of strength. That ’s what we wanted, to bring him so he could do that. ”
Back in January, the Panthers told Davis they were seeking to get younger in his position and also wouldn’t bring him back. After considering retirement, a moved Davis feels that he still has some gas left in the tank, which should profit the Chargers.
“It doesn’Regardless of whether it’s my very first year or when that really is likely to be my very final year. I’m going out with exactly the same mindset that I’m definitely going to reveal and prove,”” Davis said. “I’t always done that, and this past year isn’will be any different. … You don’t even receive any passes within this league. In case you don’t play well, theyrsquo;re going to restore you.
“my mentality, I’will come and become the very best linebacker with this team, be the very best linebacker in this league week and week out. ”
