From Mark Eisner: Making a comeback after three years out of this ring, former three-time WBO super featherweight champion Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez (30-3-3, 18 KOs) appeared magnificent in beating journeyman William Gonzalez (30-11, 26 KOs) with an eighth round knockout at a scheduled 10 round struggle on Friday night at the lightweight division at the Rubén Zayas Montañez Coliseum at Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico.
Making his first appearance since being stopped at the fifth round from Vasiliy Lomachenko on June 1 1, 2016, Rocky Martinez, 36, knocked the hard hitting replacement opponent Gonzalez down in the eighth round. The referee then stepped in and halted the struggle. The state time of the stoppage was at 1:03 of around eight.
Martinez was too much to its over-matched Gonzalez, and it’s not surprising. There was a big difference in pedigree between the two fighters. Even the 38-year-old Nicaraguan Gonzalez arrived to the struggle having lost his last four fights, and he wasn’will do much against a former world champion including Martinez.
If Martinez returns into the super featherweight division, he’s got some excellent fights open to him contrary to WBC champion Miguel Berchelt, WBA champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, WBA ‘routine ’ champ Andrew Cancio along with IBF champion Tevin Farmer. Those are paying conflicts for Martinez, but also ones that’ll be hard for them to acquire. Martinez’s likelihood of success against Tank Davis, Farmer and Berchelt demonstrably wouldn’t even be good, however he may have sufficient power and capability to conquer Cancio or WBO champion Masayuki Ito. Those guys seem susceptible at the moment.
Before his three year lay off, Rocky Martinez had lost to Lomachenko, fought with a contentious 12 round draw Orlando Salido at September 2015, also beaten Salido with a debateable 12 round decision in April 2015. All three three of those battles were tough ones for Martinez, who obtained a great deal of punishment, especially at his two conflicts against Salido. Back in November 2013, Martinez was phased out in the eighth round by Mikey Garcia. Back in September 2010, Martinez was beaten by Ricky Burns with a 12 round unanimous selection.
