Manager Steven Gerrard says he”can not shield” Alfredo Morelos any more after the Rangers striker was sent away for the fifth time this year in their 21 Old Firm defeat by Celtic.
Morelos reacted to a off the ball movie by Scott Brown, elbowing that the Celtic captain in the face.
The Colombian has also been red-carded for lashing out in Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna and Graeme Shinnie this term.
“He’ll be penalized internally and we’ll move forward,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.
“The reality is if you raise your arm, you leave yourself available. Clearly he’s been triggered to begin with but it’s happened on a lot of times now.
“I have gone beyond and above – I Have backed Alfredo more than enough and I can not shield him any more.”
- Celtic win Old Firm derby to go 1-3 points clear
- Rangers should have had two red cards Lennon
- ‘I’d never alter the way I am’ – Morelos
Morelos’ first red of this growing season, for kicking out in Scott McKenna after the Aberdeen guardian had barged himwas rescinded.
But the striker has been sent off twice more against Aberdeen this word, once for throwing a arm Shinnie, and again for a different kick on McKenna, that was ordered off to his role in the episode.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon denied that Brown’s flicking of the competitor’s leg was a pre-planned attempt to rouse the Colombian’s temper.
“” It wasn’t premeditated,” Lennon said. “You’d need to ask Alfredo Morelos he keeps doing this because he’s a great player but he’s clearly got major discipline issues.”
‘It was there for the triumph, never mind the attraction’
Rangers staged an extraordinary fightback from the reduction in both the opening goal and Morelos inside four first-half minutes, together with Ryan Kent levelling after the break.
But once they gave away possession, James Forrest struck an 86th-minute winner.
Then, Joe Worrall came agonisingly close to equalising back but was obstructed by Kristoffer Ajer, as Rangers dropped 13 points behind their Scottish Premiership-leading rivals using seven games remaining.
“I learned a whole lot about my gamers today in terms of who is with me personally, who is Ready to roll their sleeves up, especially when the Task becoming harder,” Gerrard said
“If the dust settles, I’m convinced I’ll be pleased of a lot of the operation but the reality is we’ve missed a large, crucial game and it’s tough to take. I think it was there for the triumph, never mind the attraction.
“It’s bothersome to be standing and it is difficult to take but there is alot to be pleased with, lots of character shown today, but you also get nothing for that.”
