Vettel led the way in which in the opening practice session at the Shanghai circuit after Ferrari had the upperhand on pure pace in Bahrain — but Mercedes has had the upper hand.

Vettel ended up deceiving third behind an all-Mercedes front , trailing pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas from 0.301s.

After qualifying, asked about the gap, Vettel said: “s ’s overly big. We’d enjoy it to be another way round, of course, but I do believe we had a session.

If we are able to & rsquo & ldquo; It & rsquo; s crucial;t even beat them to be right in it, therefore we’ve some options tomorrow.

“On side I think we were able to enhance the car from where we’re so I’m pretty reasonably happy however, maybe not happy. I think there was a bit more. It had been a bit tricky today to set the hands together. ”

Vettel said Mercedes “seemed to start off from a greater place” at qualifying, but expected to use Ferrari’s superior straightline rate to give the Silver Arrows a battle on Sunday, despite them being “bloody quick at the corners”.

“for people whenever we get close have a benefit in a straight line therefore we can take action there but the race is so long. It should be a very good day tomorrow. ”

Vettel declared that Ferrari was searching for the sort of sort that let it initially emerge since the favourite of testing at Barcelona following fourteen days.

“We have a platform. We started in Barcelona – that has been really good, extremely strong. Ever since that time I think we’ve struggled a tiny bit to replicate this.

“The past two races rsquo & we;ve little issues here and there, so you’re happy and you attempt to drive across the problems, decide to try to set up the car differently.

“I think rsquo, we &;re getting increasingly more there, understanding some matters linked to distinct tracks. However, like I said, the vehicle is strong, therefore it’s up to us to extract the operation. ”
