Conor McGregor is still plotting his return to the UFC, but a new name has appeared on his radar outside of a potential rematch against lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Irish superstar hasn’t fought since he fell to Nurmagomedov last October but he’s stated several times that he definitely plans on competing again in the near future.

While his focus has primarily been targeted at winning back the 155-pound title, McGregor has heard recent call outs from Jorge Masvidal, who said he would make “easy” work of the former two-division UFC champion if they ever met.

That obviously didn’t sit well with McGregor nor did what he heard from UFC president Dana White when the subject was broached during a recent conversation.

“Masvidal’s too big for him. I think Masvidal’s too big, Conor disagrees. Conor was not happy that I said Masvidal was too big for him,” White revealed when speaking at the UFC 240 post-fight press conference.

“[Conor said] that pisses me off that you said he’s too big for me. I’m telling you guys, I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again, this guy will fight anybody and I don’t care if he’s pissed off about it or not, I think that Masvidal is too big for Conor. If we ever get to that point, I’m sure it’s something Conor and I will fight about.”

While Masvidal is competing at welterweight now, he actually fought at lightweight for most of his career.

As much as White seemingly protested about the possibility of the fight happening due to the alleged size difference, he also simultaneously sowed the seeds for a potential showdown between McGregor and Masvidal in the future.

It’s a fight that Masvidal definitely wants and based on White’s comments, McGregor might be on board as well now.

Outside of that fight, White believes McGregor is really just sitting back and waiting for the upcoming UFC 242 main event to play out before deciding what will come next for him.

That night, Nurmagomedov will battle interim title holder Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi to determine an undisputed lightweight champion

“He wants to come back. Really what he’s doing is seeing how everything plays out in September,” White said about McGregor. “Right now, Khabib and Poirier are fighting. You know how this business works, anything can happen and usually does.

“So I think he’s just sort of waiting to see how it all plays out and does he have an opportunity somewhere to jump in and make something happen.”
