Frankie Edgar has called for a fight against Conor McGregor numerous times in the past and now it appears he’s finally gotten the attention of the former two-division champion.

Last week in McGregor’s first interview since losing his lightweight title to Khabib Nurmagomdov at UFC 229, the Irish superstar listed a string of potential opponents who would interest him in his return to action.

One name McGregor mentioned was Edgar, who had previously called for a fight with him while they were both competing at featherweight.

“You know who else is at the top of the list, , is also right there, up there at the top of the list,” McGregor said. “Because he has similarities to Khabib. Runs on the back foot, shoots on the single leg.

“I want these types of similar bouts and also Frankie has been very respectful. Frankie has always been respectful.”

Following a loss to reigning featherweight champion Max Holloway in his most recent fight, Edgar announced that he was moving down to 135 pounds with hopes of landing a spot on the upcoming UFC 244 card in City in November.

After seeing those comments, it appears Edgar is willing to forgo his move to bantamweight for a little while longer if he finally gets the chance to face McGregor.

“You know I’m down to fight,” Edgar said on Instagram while responding to McGregor. “It should have happened a long time ago. I know I’m going down to bantamweight but for you any weight class will do.

“Anytime any weight class you know I’m game.”

While Edgar has planned on moving down to 135 pounds, he’s a former lightweight champion and he’s spent the past six-plus years as one of the top featherweights in the sport.

Edgar has never backed down from any challenge and if McGregor is looking for an opponent for his return, the New Jersey native is more than willing to step into the cage with him.

McGregor has said that he hopes to fight again before the end of 2019 but it remains to be seen if Edgar will get the opportunity to welcome him back to the .
