Steven Peterson knew his back was against the wall coming off two straight losses but his job is definitely secure after his performance on Saturday night.
A highlight reel spinning back fist from Peterson ended Martin Bravo’s night in dramatic fashion as the American traveled into Mexico City and silenced the raucous crowd with a stunning knockout at 1:31 into the second round.
“We train to be dynamic,” Peterson said about the stunning knockout. “I found the right opening when he spun, I spun. I landed that back fist and it was lights out.”
There was no feeling out period for Bravo as he went on the attack as soon as the fight got started, throwing a flurry of combinations forcing Peterson to play defense. Peterson was struggling to keep up with the blistering pace set by Bravo, who was stalking forward with a barrage of shots to the head and body.
With less than a minute remaining in the first round, Peterson was finally able to connect with a few of his punches including one clubbing right hand that definitely caught Bravo’s attention.
The momentum shift seemed to give Peterson confidence as he came out firing in the second round, showing no fear to exchange strikes with Bravo on the feet. As the fighters began winging punches at each other, the American was happy to eat a punch to give a punch and it all paid off in the end.
As Bravo threw his second spinning attack of the fight, Peterson countered with one of his own except his punch landed with a devastating thud. Peterson’s fist connected and Bravo fell to the ground already unconscious from the knockout shot.
It was a very impressive performance from Peterson, who not only got his second UFC win but also picked up his first finish inside the Octagon with the jaw dropping knockout in the opening fight on the main card.
